Really? Why is that?
Well, the literal meaning of the expression is asking for someone's forgiveness. And it's often used to ask someone to repeat what they said, which I find very interesting.
Oh, I see what you're saying. Well, originally, when someone says, "I beg your pardon," they are really asking for forgiveness, like: I beg your pardon for being late.
But it seems like nowadays if you say that, it sounds almost too formal or serious. I usually just say: Sorry.
The expression "I beg your pardon" is just a very polite way to ask people to repeat what they said maybe because the listener wasn't paying attention. However, some people still do use this expression to ask for forgiveness.
