Hi, everyone. And welcome to Info Cloud. Anne Marie, have you ever won a medal in a competition?
That's a great question. I once won a gold medal in a writing contest in high school.
Was it really made of gold?
I doubt it. But once upon a time, gold medals people won at places like the Olympics were really made of precious metals like gold.
I heard that the Nobel Peace Prize is a medal made of real gold.
That's right. As for the Olympic gold medal, today they are required to contain at least six grams of real gold but are actually mostly another metal: silver.
The word medal and metal sound pretty similar. But one has a D, and the other has a T. Medals are usually made of metal.
That's tricky. A medal is usually seen hanging around someone's neck.
And it is usually given for an achievement.
But in the military, it might be pinched to a uniform instead.
And in the military, someone might be awarded a Medal of Honor. It often looks like a star.
In sports, there are traditionally three medals: gold for first place, silver for second place, and bronze for third. These medals are made of different kinds of metal.
